Dear Sister Liguori Rossner,

Why $46.00? Well … My wife found $40.00 on the ground a few weeks ago; there was $6.00 a week later and I just can’t think of any better way to “spend” money that wasn’t ours in the first place. And realizing that it’s all too easy to be generous with someone else’s money, I’m sending along the same amount from our own pockets.

Today, when I looked through my stack of bills, I came across your summer fundraising letter, and was reminded of an incident a few months – well, actually, a year or more ago. And I thought of the $46.

I was driving into work on Carson Street just after the West End Circle, and passed a man pushing himself in a wheelchair – a wheelchair with two flat tires. I’ve got to help this guy, I thought, so I turned my car around, pulled up near him, and offered him a ride – asked where he was going. When he told me the Jubilee Kitchen, I nearly fell over! Then he told me he had started earlier that morning from McKees Rocks. I was right – this man needed a ride!

There were a few amusing moments as I tried to figure out how to collapse the wheelchair to get it in the back of my hatchback, but I got him to the Kitchen, all the while thinking to myself about him pushing himself there on two flat tires.

Upon arrival, he was greeted by people congregating outside who knew him. I shook his hand and bid him farewell.

Surely, any physical sustenance he received at the Kitchen that day – or any day – would be consumed by the physical effort of getting there on his failing means of transportation.

Surely, there was more than just physical sustenance – food – that drove him on his journey, repeatedly. I am thankful that an organization such as yours can provide such a broad range of “sustenance” to those in our community who need it.

I congratulate you on your many big accomplishments, but especially for the little victories along the way – and I wish you many more of them.

Sincerely,
Don S.
