How to Volunteer?

Where does Jubilee receive money to operate?

Mostly from private donations. Approximately 60% of our budget comes from ordinary people. Some give once a month, others respond to our semi-annual appeals. We believe in people helping people so we do not accept government monies. We do appeal to foundations for assistance.

Why did you start the Jubilee Kitchen?

There was evidence in the 1970s that people in our area were hungry. We believe that a small committed group of people could alleviate that problem.

Why did you call the kitchen Jubilee?

Its name comes from the Book of Leviticus in the Jewish Scriptures. The author of Leviticus tells of the Jubilee Years in Hebrew history and how they were an opportunity for the poor to regain lost property. This would narrow the gap between the rich and the poor and provide for a more egalitarian society. We want to narrow the gap and work for a more equal society in our time.

What are your hours of operation?

We are open 365 days a year from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. We serve a small breakfast and a full meal between those hours.

How many do you feed each day?

Approximately 150 people each day are fed a hot, nutritious meal.

What do volunteers do at Jubilee?

Volunteers assist the cook and dishwasher with simple tasks such as cutting vegetables, preparing the lettuce and fruit salads, serving the meal and cleaning up.

Are there any special qualifications for volunteers?

The only qualification we have is age. We prefer that young (those under 13 years of age) do not come.
