Many students live in economically depressed communities, single parent homes, there may also exists drug/alcohol problems in the home, they may be pregnant or teen parents and even have one or more parents that are incarcerated. Many are not trusting of government, school or business because of prior bad experiences.

I have found to be successful with this type of student the bonds of trust, compassion and respect must be mutually established.

Resources

From our nine year run of the program, we believe that InfoLink students are a lot like college students. With the right interventions, they fit in on campus, they are successful in working on real projects using advanced information technologies, and they experience a good-paying and professional internship that lets them see the benefits of education. Ninety-three percent of Infolink graduates attain post-high school education including associate and baccalaureate degrees. Many have attained professional employment. InfoLink provides a means for future community leaders to arise, breaking out of poverty.

We believe that the Infolink model can work in any college or university. If in or near a large city, then students can be drawn from the region. InfoLink is not a residential program on campus in the summer, but a commuting program. Other models are based on summer residence.

Below are resource materials to help you develop your own program based on the InfoLink model.
